Suolaisuuden mittaaminen ei ole helppoa. Vettä haihduttaessa jäljelle jäänneistä suoloista ei voida tarkasti päätellä meriveden suolaisuutta. Eräät suolat alkavat muodostaa kaasuja, joita ei esiinny merivedessä. Suolaisuus voidaan määrittää kemiallisen analyysin avulla, mutta koska merivesi on monimutkainen yhdiste, kemiallinen määrittäminen on erittäin hankalaa. Vaikka suolapitoisuuden mittaaminen kuulostaa vaikealta, meille se on helppoa: ämpäri mereen ja saadusta vesinäytteestä mitataan anturilla suolapitoisuus.
Meillä on käytössämme LABQUEST ja VERNIERIN SALINITY anturi (salinity = saliniteetti = suolapitoisuus).
Hypoteesina on, että mitä pohjoisemmaksi purjehdimme, sitä vähäsuolaisempaa Itämeren vesi on. Tämä perustuu siihen, että Tanskan salmien läpi tuleva Atlantin erittäin suolapitoinen merivesi laimenee Suomeen tullessa, ja Itämereen valuu meilläpäin paljon makeaa vettä jokien ja sateiden takia.

- Helin niemimaan edusta 5,2 ‰ (ppt)
- Gdanskin lahden pohjoisosa 5,5 ‰ (ppt)
- Kaliningradin edusta 5,6 ‰ (ppt)
- Kuurin haffin edusta 2,4 ‰ (ppt)
Tulokset osittain tukevat oletustamme, mutta on otettava huomioon, että näytteet ovat olleet pintavettä, joka on vähäsuolaisempaa kuin syvävesi.
