Welcome to Puolala School

Puolala School is located right in the centre of Turku near the hub of excellent public transportation. Puolala has had language classes since 1990. Teaching in English, German and Russian is given to pupils in grades 1–9 using the CLIL method.

Teaching in the language classes, grades 1–9, English

Grades 1–2

  • Language learning is functional, i.e. pupils play and learn rhymes and songs in English.
  • Pupils learn to perform everyday school routines in English.
  • Teaching focuses on understanding and producing spoken English.
  • Gradually pupils are introduced to educational topics in English.
  • A native speaker offers support to pupils in learning English beginning in the 1st grade.
  • Pupils learn to read and write in Finnish.

Grades 3–6

  • As language skills develop, the amount of English used in teaching increases and becomes more varied.
  • Pupils use not only their oral and listening comprehension skills in English, but also their reading comprehension skills as well as their writing skills to a much greater extent.
  • English is used in all subjects except Finnish.
  • ICT is diversely used in the English language and culture studies.
  • Formal English studies focus on the structure of the language and grammatical correctness beginning in the 3rd grade.

Grades 7–9

  • Language remains a tool for learning in the secondary school.
  • The goal is to strengthen and develop the language skills learned in the primary school.
  • English is used in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Social studies and Health education.
  • There is a slight increase in the amount of Finnish used in teaching to ensure pupils acquire the skills needed to continue to further education.

There is a possibility to take part in an exchange program with a European school.
