Methods and concepts

Teaching in the language classes is referred to as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). This means that teaching is carried out both in Finnish and in a foreign language. Other terms used to refer to corresponding forms of foreign language teaching include language class teaching, language enrichment teaching, or bilingual teaching. Pupils are taught in a foreign language throughout comprehensive school, in grades 1–9.

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is the method used in Turku. Kerttuli Primary School offers Swedish immersion teaching, and pupils can continue it in Luostarivuori Secondary School. Teaching is based on the immersion method beginning at an early age.
