In English

Welcome to ”Arbis”, the Swedish Adult Education Center of Åbo (Turku)!

At Arbis we offer you the possibility to study a wide array of subjects, such as languages, arts, handicrafts, gymnastics, yoga and cooking. In addition we arrange Swedish courses with English as the teaching language. Please note that, except for some of the language courses, all the courses are held in Swedish. Arbis is managed by the city of Turku and has been running since 1908. The courses and lectures are open to everyone, regardless of municipality or mother tongue.

The study programme for the spring term of 2023 is available online.

You can enrol on spring term courses from December 12th 2023, 18:00 onwards.

Enrolment dates and course start dates

The enrolment for the spring term of 2023 starts on Tuesday, December 12th, 2023, at 18:00. You can enrol either online at Arbis’ webpage or at the office at Kaskisgatan 5. The study programme for the spring term will be available online in November and will also be published as a brochure in the beginning of December.

If you have a Finnish social security number, the fastest and simplest way to enroll is online. If you do not have access to a computer or do not have a Finnish social security number, you can register personally at Arbis, Kaskisgatan 5 (fifth floor) as of the date mentioned above. If you have enrolled online, you will immediately receive a sign-up confirmation to the e-mail address you have given. No other documentation is needed in order to participate in the course/the lectures.

For most courses the enrolment deadline is approximately one week before the course starts. If the course is already full, you will be added to a waiting list. Arbis will contact you if there is a free slot at a later date and you can participate if you are still interested.

Arbis retains the right to change course dates, locations and group sizes if necessary. During the corona pandemic courses can, if necessary, be adjusted to be given as distance education and, if the situation permits, adjusted back to classroom teaching.

Fees

All fees, including lecture fees, are invoiced. We do not handle cash at the office.

You will be sent an invoice during the term to the address given at the registration. Arbis is gradually implementing an option of invoicing courses by email. The option is mentioned separately for the relevant courses.

If you have not cancelled your registration within the set time frame (see below), you are bound to pay the course fee and possible material fees. Unpaid fees will be sent to collections. The course fee will not be returned. The principal can waive the fee or allow a differing amount to be paid if the student can provide a certificate of illness that states that the student cannot participate in the course.

The course fee will be reduced if Arbis cancels a course when more than 1/3 of the course remains. However, fees will not be reduced or repaid if the reduction will be less than 10 € or if the course is cancelled due to force majeure or reduced.

Cancellation and withdrawing from the course

If you wish to cancel your enrolment to the course, it can be done free of charge until one week (at the latest) before the planned start date of the course. The cancellation is done electronically if you have registered online. Otherwise you can cancel your registration to the course by contacting Arbis. If you have failed to cancel your registration within the provided time frame, you will be bound to pay the course fee. Unpaid course fees will be sent to collections.

If you withdraw from the course after it already has started, please cancel by sending an e-mail to: arbis@edu.turku.fi
As stated earlier the course fee will not be returned if the cancellation is done after the provided time frame. Please note that the teachers do not handle registrations, cancellations or notifications about withdrawing from courses. Registrations or cancellations that are submitted only to the teacher are not valid.

The students will be noted by text message, e-mail or a phone call if the course is cancelled. The decision whether a course is taught, will in general be made one week (at the latest) before the planned start date of the course. Arbis reserves the right to make changes in the study program.
