English enrichment teaching at Vaisaari School

What

The CLIL method has been used at Vaisaari School (grades 7–9) since 2007. Before that time, the school had an English Oriented Class (EOC), which was established in the mid-1990s.
The CLIL method is used in approximately half of the subjects taught.

Enrolment

Pupils in the 6th grade who wish to study in the CLIL class at Vaisaari are requied to take an entrance examination.

How

  • Teachers at Vaisaari utilise the CLIL method in Mathematics, History, Social Studies, Religion, Home Economics, Art, Health Education, and in the compulsory elective courses for each grade, i.e. Science in the 7th grade, Lyrics in the 8th grade, and English Literature and Culture in the 9th grade.
  • Approximately 30 % of the teaching is in English in which case it is considered supplementary learning.
  • The aim is to provide pupils with as much contact with English as possible, to offer them the opportunity to use the language as a tool in their learning and to acquire stronger skills in the language than they would in ordinary English lessons. Teachers follow the curriculum set for each subject.
  • Pupils learn about the structure and grammatical correctness of English during their English lessons, which are taught by a native speaker.
  • Teachers abide by the general principles for assessment in compulsory education.
  • Pupils in the English enrichment class have the opportunity to take a one-week trip to an English-speaking country to increase their knowledge of the culture. Pupils are required to pay for the trip themselves.
