English enrichment teaching at Maijamäki School

In practice, the English enrichment class at Maijamäki School is an extension of the studies in the English enrichment class in Kuparivuori School.

For whom is English enrichment teaching appropriate?

English enrichment teaching is intended for those who

  • have a positive attitude toward school and learning,
  • are competent in learning new things in a foreign language, and
  • are sociable and have a tolerant outlook on the world.

Goals of teaching in a foreign language

  • To develop a positive, broad-minded attitude toward foreign languages, and to prompt courage and desire to use them.
  • To teach pupils to think on a global level.
  • To familiarise pupils with the central themes and vocabulary in school subjects as stated in the curriculum.
  • To familiarise pupils with the various cultures in English-speaking countries.

More important educational topics are discussed in Finnish to ensure pupils have understood them.

English enrichment teaching at Maijamäki School

English enrichment teaching began in 2004.

There are three classes, one on each grade level. English enrichment teaching is currently being given in Biology, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, History, Social Studies, and Religion.

Approximately 25 % of the teaching in each subject is in English. A topic make be discussed entirely in English or in Finnish depending on the nature of the topic in question.

Teachers abide by the general principles for assessment in compulsory education.
