La Semaine de la Francophie is in March and  the Vasaramäki pupils wanted to celebrate it in advance because our school had two French teachers visiting us. The pupils were overwhelmed by the goodies offered.

How to study the irregular verbs in an interesting way? That’s a question the sixth grade pupils have been thinking a lot. Eetu, a student from grade 6 B got a great idea.  What do you think of it?

Carnaval De Quebec

March 1st, 2017 · Comments Off on Carnaval De Quebec · Yleinen

Last Wednesday Grades 4 to 9 celebrated Carnaval at our school.

Carnaval is a long history of celebrations lasting from late January to mid-February in Quebec City. In the worldwide capital of snow, the first large-scale winter carnival took place in 1894. These festivities helped a population often faced with harsh winters to warm their hearts during the cold season. The Carnival would go on to resurface every once in a while until the second half of the century, interrupted by events such as both world wars and the Great Depression.

We celebrate Carnaval as we moved through different stations in the school including: cabane a sucre, ceinture flechee bracelets, bola ball, music and dancing.

Bonhomme was running around our school, too!

Visit https://carnaval.qc.ca/ for more information.

Merci!

Letters to Dr. Donald Massey School

February 22nd, 2017 · Comments Off on Letters to Dr. Donald Massey School · Yleinen

The 6th grade pupils of Vasaramäki School wrote traditional -old-fashioned – letters to the 6th graders in Dr. Donald Massy School. Why? Social media is quick, it literally travels at the speed of light, whereas the traditional letters may take even a week to reach its destination. However,  some of the pupils were thrilled by the idea of writing letters, and especially by the idea of receiving a letter.

Let’s see how long it takes these letters to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

We love language arts! We use a writing program called Empowering Writers, accompanied by novel studies. We are currently reading The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis, about an 11 year old girl who lives in Afghanistan and has to take care of her family during war times.

We use a reading strategy called R.A.P. cited in this video clip.
